UFC 309 will happen on November 16, 2014 in New York City, and its fight card will feature MMA stars such as Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic. Also featured on the line up is a promising lightweight clash between Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler.
This event will be hosted at Madison Square Garden. This marks the eighth time the UFC has visited the iconic venue since 2016, when the ban on mixed martial arts was first lifted in the city. Below is everything you need to know about the UFC’s next major pay-per-view event.
The main event for UFC 309 is a clash between MMA legends Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic, but there are many questions about its matchmaking.
Topping the MSG event is a UFC heavyweight title bout between current champion Jon Jones and one of the all-time greats in the division in Stipe Miocic. This bout was originally booked for UFC 295 the year prior, but Jones had to pull out due to an injury and subsequent surgery to his pectoral muscle.
The UFC 309 main event has been criticized by many, as UFC CEO Dana White repeatedly insisted on booking this match up first instead of unifying the heavyweight titles with interim champion Tom Aspinall.
Miocic is a legend of the sport due to having two UFC championship reigns and four title defenses. He’s an all-time great at heavyweight, but many have questioned if he deserves a title shot in 2024. After all, Miocic is now 42 years old, hasn’t won a fight in over four years, and was badly knocked out in his last fight over three years ago.
Two-division champion Jon Jones has repeatedly indicated that he most likely will retire after UFC 309, so this may just be his final fight.
Jon Jones doesn’t seem to have any plans of defending his title against interim champion Tom Aspinall, even if he wins this bout against Stipe Miocic. Jones kept reiterating his desire to retire, stating that UFC 309 would “more than likely” be “the last time” he fights.
Jones was the undisputed king at light heavyweight for several years. His current place at the top of the heavyweight division though, is questionable at best.
After teasing a run at heavyweight for over a decade, Jones only then moved up after the lineal champion in Francis Ngannou left the promotion. He then won a vacant UFC title against Ciryl Gane and is now scheduled to face the #8 ranked Stipe Miocic. Both those opponents lost to Ngannou, and Aspinall is the only other fighter with a case for being the best heavyweight today, but it seems like Jones won’t end up facing either champion.
If this is really the end, Jones is obviously still a surefire Hall of Famer and among the best to ever compete in MMA. At the same time, it’s also fair to say that his heavyweight stint leaves a lot to be desired.
The promotion has officially confirmed the UFC 309 fight card and bout order.
