International Game Technology (IGT) is being sued for its Wheel of Fortune slot, with plaintiffs accusing the casino game maker making use of a rigged slot.
IGT's Wheel of Fortune slot can be found at in-person casinos as well as online at sweepstakes casinos. It's a popular slot based on the long-running Wheel of Fortune game show that's definitely a fan-favorite. IGT has been manufacturing the Wheel of Fortune slot since 1997 and the company even claims it's one of the "most successful slot themes" of all time. However, some now believe that the Wheel of Fortune slot machine is rigged, and a class-action lawsuit has been fired against its creators at IGT.
The 31-page lawsuit states that the Wheel of Fortune slot makes players think they have a fair chance of winning by featuring a bonus wheel with equally sized segments for each bonus amount. The game uses the voices of the game show's hosts, including long-time co-host Vanna White, and implements sound effects that cause the spin to appear random — but that's not actually the case. The plaintiffs accuse the game of being programmed to stop much more often on segments with lower value, despite appearances indicating otherwise. They even compared it to a roulette wheel with a magnet beneath losing segments.
"The bonus wheel feature is not what it seems,” the filing reads.
Due to the Wheel of Fortune slot being allegedly rigged, the plaintiffs are now seeking compensation and are also demanding that IGT clarify the actual odds of the bonus wheel feature. They have named some casinos in the lawsuit as well, including MGM Resorts, Bally’s Corporation, PENN Entertainment, Station Casinos, and Boyd Gaming, explaining that the casinos with this machine are siphoning "billions of dollars" from players' pockets. The plaintiffs explain that this comes down to the game being rigged, but also the feeling that the game is designed to keep players betting longer due to a false belief that they have a bigger chance to win big than they actually do.
The case has been filed in the United States District Court for the District of Nevada, with the plaintiffs asking for a full jury trial. The lawsuit can be read in its entirety here.
This comes at a time when other casino entities are being sued all across the United States over false representation.
