Being able to play blackjack online with friends hasn’t always been the easiest thing to do. However, under the sweepstakes umbrella, you’ll now find sites that can legally accommodate those of you who wish to play from most US states.
In this guide, we cover the fundamentals of playing blackjack with friends at a social casino site. This means that you’ll soon discover all there is to know about virtual tokens, free online blackjack games, the process of referring friends, and even a few top tips to help you get the most out of your playing time.
Those of you who are familiar with blackjack will be pleased to hear that sweepstakes blackjack follows the same gaming principle, but differs when it comes to funding the experience. In fact, you won’t ever need to spend a dime in order to load up free blackjack games at a social casino.
Instead, these sites make use of free virtual tokens that allow you to toggle between fun and promotional play. These tokens can then be used to play blackjack as you normally would; however, you will never leave with real money. You can, however, play in a promotional manner, win additional Sweeps Coins (promotional virtual tokens) through gameplay, and later redeem them for prizes.
When it comes to playing, you will follow the same gaming principles (and you may even play the same games as you would at a real-money gambling site), aiming to land as close to 21 as possible. To invite new friends, you can then look to utilize the refer-a-friend bonus, receiving additional virtual tokens for every friend that signs up using your bonus. For those who are already signed up, simply send them a message in the chat room to join an open table.
Although the complexities and bonus features of each social blackjack table may differ, you’ll find that this step-by-step helps you “play” your first hand with friends.
As touched upon, social blackjack falls under a different legal header from real-money gambling, meaning social blackjack sites and free blackjack apps aren’t subject to the same strict restrictions.
That said, these platforms are still regulated by statewide organizations and vetted closer at a state level. Due to how they operate, though, they are deemed to offer games of skill, not luck, and are now accepted in all US states except for Washington and Idaho.
Nevada, Michigan, and Montana also have stricter policies and specific legislation in place, meaning that you won’t find too many social blackjack sites free to open their virtual doors there. Aside from a few other site-specific restrictions, you will find that social blackjack with friends is legal and accessible in the US.
You will find that you have two main ways to play blackjack online with friends – for fun or with promotional play as the focus. To help differentiate between the two, you’ll notice that most free blackjack sites with no download will utilize two virtual tokens. Oftentimes, these virtual tokens are known as Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins. This table provides you with a quick comparison between them.
| Gold Coins | Sweeps Coins |
| Play for fun only | Used to enter sweepstakes play |
| Can be won, unlocked as a bonus, or purchased | Can be won and unlocked as a free bonus |
| Can never be redeemed or withdrawn | Can never be purchased directly |
| May find exclusive blackjack games aimed at Gold Coins only | May find a few limitations on the available games from within the lobby |
| Available in more US states | Sweeps Coins won through gameplay can be exchanged for prizes (terms apply) |
Now you know exactly how to play free blackjack to redeem real money prizes or with fun as the focus, it is important to consider the types of games available to you. Of course, you must bear in mind that this can change significantly from site to site.
First up, we have single-player sweepstakes blackjack games. Unfortunately, these video titles aren’t overly social in a literal sense, but you can still refer your friends to the site and both enjoy talking about these games in the chat room.
Although lacking a massive social element, these games will come with other perks, including realistic animations, auto-stand and auto-bet features, fast-play, and a number of bonus rounds and multipliers.
When it comes to playing these games, you’ll find that you can soon switch between Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins before finding variations of these three main game formats.
By far the best way to play social blackjack online with friends is through the live casino. Although not available at all social casino sites, you’ll find that many of the best have you covered.
Here, you will be able to enter multiplayer games and soon be met by a live host. You will also notice that these games tend to have table limits, meaning other players are ready and waiting with you. Chat rooms allow you to engage with others, share strategies, and even brag about your winnings. Of course, this means you have the chance to make friends along the way or invite your own friends to the party.
Just bear in mind that limits here tend to be a little higher than standard social blackjack titles, hovering between 0.50 - 5.00 Sweeps Coins per hand. For Gold Coins, of course, this will differ. When looking at specific live social blackjack variations, you’ll soon come across the following:
