Using probability theory to choose winning lotto numbers
Probability theory and mathematical patterns can be used to help players make easy winning lotto selections. These help to take the guesswork out of picking numbers and provide a system that you can use for any lottery, not just the Powerball or Mega Millions.
Choosing random lotto numbers
If you don’t want to use the same lotto numbers every time, or you want to set up an initial pick and don’t know where to start, there are several ways to determine a random selection.
Random number generators
Random number generators can take the stress out of making your lotto pick by selecting all of your numbers for you. This method copies the system used by the official lotto drawings and has proven to be successful, as around 70% of Powerball lotto wins come from using this method.
A random number generator picks numbers based on an internal algorithm. This creates a group of numbers that can’t be predicted other than by random chance.

- Use a free online random number generator such as Random.org and LotteryRandom.com.

Using mathematical systems to choose lotto numbers
If you're searching for 2023 lottery numbers, and you’re not put off by a few calculations, then there are many different ways to utilize mathematical study of patterns to help you choose your winning lotto numbers.
Delta system
The Delta system is a mathematical strategy which uses the average space between digits to create a set of, hopefully, winning lottery numbers!
The Delta system takes some work, so bear with us as we take you through an example. They’re not exact guidelines, so feel free to bend them a little!
Stage one
- Select a number below 5, let's say 2.
- Choose two further numbers between 1 and 8, e.g. 3, and 6. This gives us: 2, 3, and 6.
- Pick a fourth number which is above or below 8, e.g. 9. This gives us 2, 3, 6, and 9.
- Choose two numbers between 8 and 15, for example 10 and 13. Our numbers are now: 2, 3, 6, 9, 10, 13.
Stage two
- Add your chosen six numbers together. If the total is larger than the highest number in the lotto, then repeat the process with lower number choices. For our chosen digits, this gives us a total of 43.
- Mix the numbers up to create a different order: 10, 3, 6, 2, 13, 9. These are your delta numbers.
- The first number then becomes your first lotto number, in this case 10.
- To create your second number, add up the first two shuffled numbers: 10 + 3=13.
- To create your third number, add together your second number and your third delta: 13 + 6 =19.
- To create your fourth number, add the third lotto number to the fourth delta number (19+2=21).
- To produce your fifth lotto number, put together the fourth lotto number and the fifth delta (21+13=34).
- To make your sixth lotto number, add the fifth lotto number to the sixth delta (34+9=43).
This creates the lotto numbers: 10, 13, 19, 21, 34, 43.
The Wheeling system
The Wheeling system also focuses on specific digits, but aims to increase the likelihood of getting a win by combining every possible combination of those numbers. This means that one ticket at least should be a winner if those numbers appear.
To illustrate this, it’s best to look at an example in more detail. Let’s say that the digits you
believe will be lotto winning numbers are: 13, 14, 39, and 41, in a lottery which requires you to match six out of 69 numbers to score the jackpot prize.
To make sure that you have a winning ticket, you would need to purchase lotto tickets with the following combinations:
- 1, 2, 4, 13, 39, 41
- 1, 3, 4, 13, 39, 41
- 1, 4, 5, 13, 39, 41
- 1, 4, 6, 13, 39, 41 and so on and so on!
Tips
- This method is not very practical for individuals, but can be good for those in a lottery syndicate or pool, as the cost is spread out. However, this does mean the prize is spread out too!
Using lucky numbers
Many people choose to play the same set of numbers every single time. These numbers could be special dates, like birthdays and anniversaries, or just a random assortment that is felt to be lucky.
Using this method takes the work out of picking new numbers each time. It can also appeal in terms of probability, as every time your numbers don’t appear, they may be more likely to appear next time.
Tips
As so many people base their number selection on special dates, this places a greater concentration on the numbers 1-31. Picking a number above this means you’ll have to share your prize with fewer people if you do win.
Choose numbers that are considered to be unlucky
Fewer people are likely to choose these, again meaning that any prize you get will have to be shared among fewer winning tickets. 13 is often avoided as a lotto choice, but other numbers have unlucky connotations in different cultures too. For example, the number 4 is considered unlucky in China because it sounds similar to the word for death.
Lucky numbers aren't always so
On the flip side, this means that winning combinations featuring numbers thought to be lucky are more popular, and will therefore offer smaller payouts in case of wins. The numbers 7 and 9, for example, and combinations using those numbers, are considered to be lucky.
Find hot, cold, and overdue numbers to help you score lotto wins
Although the lotto has its roots far back in history (even its name is hundreds of years old and comes from a Dutch word meaning ‘fate’), it continues to be very popular. When lotteries started becoming more prevalent across America, many newspapers started to prepare reports on the most winning lottery numbers, or, in other words, the numbers which were most frequently drawn. These are called hot numbers. On the other hand, numbers which are not frequently drawn are known as cold numbers. This idea can help some players to make their choice of winning lotto numbers.
The theory here is that players can choose hot numbers, with the understanding that they are more regularly drawn. An overdue number is a hot number that hasn’t appeared in the most recent draws, which could mean that it’s more likely to appear soon. Or, players may choose to go for cold numbers as, again, probability suggests that these numbers should be drawn as frequently as others, so should be due to appear soon.
Other players opt instead to go for a mixture of hot, cold, and overdue numbers to give themselves the best chance of an even spread of lotto winning numbers.

Odds and Evens
This strategy differs slightly to the above as it doesn’t focus on individual numbers, but looks at number groups. According to this understanding, it is unlikely that most winning lottery numbers will be entirely odd, or entirely even. What is more likely is that there will be a mixture between odds and evens. Therefore, the strategy here is to select a mix of even and odd numbers to give you a spread.
