Trifecta bets, a favorite with horse racing fans, come in various formats and can be super-tricky to figure out in your head. That’s why it’s best to use our flexible trifecta payout calculator here at PromoGuy US.
To use our trifecta calculator, you enter your stake - either the total or the amount per bet - input the number of runners in the race, choose the type of trifecta bet you want to place, then make your selections. Once that’s done, the calculator will show you the number of combinations, and the stake cost.
The ultimate aim of our trifecta calculator is to show you the stake cost and various betting scenarios for any type of trifecta bet. Although it’s all very simple in theory, calculating how much you need to stake, and the percentage of unit per combination, can be pretty tricky.
But our trifecta payout calculator does all of the hard work for you. All that you need to do is input the number of horses in the race and your total or per-bet stake, then make your selections. Once you’ve done that, click the “Calculate” button and the calculator will instantly give you the results that you need.
Here is all of the information that you need to input to use the trifecta payout calculator:
Once you have finalised your input, when you click ‘Calculate’ the calculator will provide the following information:
If you haven’t already done so, then sign up with one or more of our recommended PayPal sportsbooks and make a deposit. It’s quite likely that you’ll pick up a bonus along the way and soon you’ll be ready to place your first trifecta bet.
In which case, just follow the steps below to use our trifecta calculator effectively:
As an example, we’ve used a seven horse race at Gulf Stream Park, which was run at 13.00 on the day of writing. To keep it relatively simple, we’ll use $1 per bet for a normal trifecta and make two selections for each place.
Here’s how it works:
Stake: | $1.00 | Per Bet | ||
Type of bet: | Normal | |||
Number of runners: | 7 | |||
1st place: | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
5 | 6 | 7 | All field | |
2nd place: | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
5 | 6 | 7 | All field | |
3rd place: | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
5 | 6 | 7 | All field | |
Cost: | $16.00 | |||
Combinations: | 16 | |||
Percentage of unit: | 100% | |||
What you can see above is that we have placed $1.00 bets on each combination in a seven-horse race. It is a normal trifecta and we have selected two horses for each place position.
As we haven’t chosen the same horse for any position, there are 16 potential winning combinations for this trifecta. As a result, 100% of each unit staked ($1.00) covers every combination, giving the trifecta a total cost of $16.00. If we were to increase our stake to $2.00, the total cost would increase to $32.00 and the percentage of unit would be 200%, and so on.
Before you can make use of our trifecta payout calculator, it’s first important to understand how this bet type works. A ‘standard’ trifecta is a type of horse racing wager that involves you picking the top three placed horses in the correct order. Of course, predicting which horses will finish first, second, and third in the correct order is very tricky, but there are other types of Trifecta bet that cover other outcomes.
You can select multiple combinations to cover more eventualities. This increases your chances of winning but obviously increases your stake too.
Moreover, a trifecta is a type of pool bet, so it is not possible to calculate your potential payout with any accuracy. If you make a correct prediction, your payout will depend on the size of the pool and the number of other accurate predictions made for that race.
This is the most straightforward trifecta where you simply pick the horses you think will finish first, second, and third, in the correct order. Despite being the easiest to understand, it is the hardest to get right, as there is only one potential outcome covered by your bet.
With this trifecta type, you pick one horse to finish first, which is your “Standout”. You can then choose multiple horses to finish second and third, which increases your win probability, but reduces your expected percentage payout compared to a normal trifecta.
A boxed trifecta involves picking at least three horses to finish in the top three places in no particular order. This makes it even more flexible and gives you a higher win probability than either of the two trifecta bet types detailed above.
Here you “Bank” on one horse to win. For the other positions, you must select three or more horses, which are then boxed, so they can finish in any order. The difference between this bet and a Standout trifecta, is that your Banker must win - if it only places, the entire bet loses.

Calculating a trifecta payout accurately is not possible due to the fact that it is a type of pool bet. But what you can do is to assess your percentage payout using factors including your stake per bet, unit percentage, trifecta type, and number of selections. To make it easier, we recommend using our calculator here at PromoGuy.us, which has been custom-built for all types of trifecta bets.
That depends on the type of trifecta and the number of horses that you choose for each place. Additionally, you have to consider if you are betting $2 in total, or $2 per bet, the latter would equate to a bigger total stake, but also a larger payout. For more information and accurate results, check out our guide and trifecta payout calculator here at PromoGuy.us.
If you want to box five horses in a trifecta and wager $1 on each selection, there would be 60 possible win combinations. This means that your total stake for the box five trifecta bet would be $60.
