Do your loved ones often accuse you of "spending all your time on your favorite sports team"? Well, now we’ve got the hard numbers. PromoGuy’s latest study reveals American sports enthusiasts devote a staggering 624 days of their lives to their sports heroes. That’s 1.71 years! We took some precious time to conduct a survey of 2,000 sports fans across the country. And guess what?

  • Sports fans in Mississippi devote by far the most time to their favorite team, averaging 962 days of their life—that's a solid 2.64 years!
  • In Utah, fans spend the least time on their sports heroes, averaging just 286 days over their lifetime—roughly 0.78 years.

U.S. sports fans devote 1.71 years of their lives to their team

Life is short—a truth we often overlook. That’s why it’s so important to spend your time on what truly matters. For many Americans, that means sports. But how much time do sports fanatics actually dedicate to their favorite teams over a lifetime? Whether it’s watching games, attending matches, checking scores, or following players on social media, the time quickly adds up. According to our study, the average fan devotes 4.8 hours per week to their team. That’s a staggering 624 days—or 1.71 years—over a lifetime!*

Mississippians spend the most time on their sports heroes

We all have just 24 hours in a day. But how do we spend them? In Mississippi, it’s loud and clear: sports! Sports fans in Mississippi devote an average of 962 days of their lives to their favorite team—that’s 2.64 years over a lifetime. This gives Mississippi the national record, leaving North Dakota and West Virginia behind. In these two states, sports fans spend an average of 780 days (or 2.14 years) on their teams, earning them a shared second place. California and Nevada round out the top 5, with fans dedicating an average of 766 and 740 days per lifetime, respectively.

Utah fans spend the least time on their teams

In Utah, on the other hand, significantly less time is devoted to favorite sports teams. The life of a Utah sports fan consists of 286 days of fandom. This gives Utah the lowest national average. Oklahoma ranks second-lowest, with 325 days per lifetime. Alabama and Maryland are tied for third-lowest, with 429 days—or 1.18 years—devoted to their teams.

* This is based on an average fandom of 60 years over a lifetime.

Methodology

In November 2024, PromoGuy.us conducted an independent survey of 2,000 sports fans across the country. Respondents were asked how much time, on average, they spend per week on their favorite sports team. This includes activities such as watching or attending games, following news, social media, and tracking scores. For the calculation, an average fandom of 60 years over a lifetime was used. The survey sample was 53% male, 46% female, 0.5% non-binary, and 0.5% identified as other. The average age of respondents was 41.5 years. The following states were excluded due to insufficient data: Alaska, Hawaii, Montana, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming.
