The legal history of sports betting in Mississippi - From river boats to online betting
While Mississippi has a rich history in the gambling market that dates all the way back to the 1800s, it was only in 2018 that the sports betting market opened up. So, let’s take a look at where it all began.
During the early 19th Century, the Mississippi Great River was a hotspot for import and export businesses. Individuals who worked on the boats bringing goods in and out of the state took to gambling to pass the time on their long journeys. Over time, word got around that boats on the Mississippi River were the place to find fun gambling activities and attracted professional card players. As boats, these locales weren’t technically on shore, so they got around laws that prohibited gambling.
For the next few decades, the legality of gambling on gambling on riverboats was a gray area. It was only in the 1980s that the first legalized riverboat casinos opened and, during the 1990s, the Mississippi Gaming Control Act was passed which permitted casinos to open on dry land.
Until 2017, only land-based and riverboat casinos were permitted as the only type of gambling in Mississippi, and it changed when the state’s lawmakers repealed the law that had previously prohibited sports betting.

Mississippi’s first retail sportsbooks launched in August 2018, with players able to wager at Beau Rivage in Biloxi and Gold Strike in Tunica.
