NFL Season Kickoff
The wait is over — the NFL is back. And while the first snap of the 2025 season is only hours away, the league has spent the past seven months making sure it never left the spotlight. Trades, new rules, and fresh faces have reshaped the season before it even begins.
The offseason’s biggest shock came when Dallas traded Micah Parsons to Green Bay. The Packers immediately locked him down with the richest non-QB contract in league history, betting that Parsons is the missing piece to push them past Philly and San Francisco in the NFC.
Quarterbacks also shuffled like cards: Aaron Rodgers landed in Pittsburgh for what he says is his final season, Sam Darnold reset in Seattle after Minnesota promoted JJ McCarthy, and Geno Smith found himself back with Pete Carroll in Las Vegas. Add in wideout moves like DK Metcalf to Pittsburgh and Davante Adams to the Rams, and the balance of power feels different already.
Rule tweaks could shape games just as much as the rosters. Kickoffs are now spotted at the 35 if they sail into the end zone, onside kicks can happen at any point in the game (not just the fourth quarter), and overtime guarantees each team a possession. And yes, the Eagles’ “tush push” survived another vote.
As always, it comes down to contenders. Philly’s dominant lines and Saquon Barkley’s record-setting year put them in pole position to repeat, but the NFC is stacked with Green Bay, Detroit, Washington, and the Rams. In the AFC, it’s the usual suspects: Baltimore, Buffalo, and Kansas City, all riding their superstar QBs.
The rookie class adds intrigue: Cam Ward starts from day one in Tennessee, Travis Hunter will try to be the NFL’s Shohei Ohtani in Jacksonville, and Raiders RB Ashton Jeanty could prove the position is far from dead.
