The AL Central race is officially chaos. Cleveland used a bizarre sixth inning, two bunts, a between-the-legs throwing error by Tarik Skubal, and a balk, to flip the game and beat Detroit 5-2, pulling even with the Tigers atop the division. The Guardians now hold the crucial head-to-head tiebreaker with just five games left. Detroit struck out 19 times, wasting another strong start from Skubal and raising even more questions about their fading offense.
Meanwhile, San Diego is back in the postseason for the fourth time in six years. The Padres clinched with a 5-4 walk-off win in 11 innings over the Brewers, thanks to Freddy Fermin’s RBI single. The win set off a champagne-soaked celebration at Petco Park, with Manny Machado promising this group “has the heart” to make another run. If the standings hold, San Diego heads to Wrigley for a best-of-3 wild-card series against the Cubs.
