The San Francisco 49ers pulled off one of the gutsiest wins of the NFL season, surviving a short-handed trip to Los Angeles to stun the Rams 26-23 in overtime. Playing without Brock Purdy, George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, Nick Bosa and more, Kyle Shanahan leaned on Christian McCaffrey and a patchwork roster to scratch out a statement victory. Mac Jones, pressed into the starting role, battled through injuries but delivered when needed. A late goal-line fumble forced by Alfred Collins and a fourth-down stop in OT sealed it, giving the Niners a 4-1 record and one of Shanahan’s most impressive wins as head coach.
Meanwhile in Chicago, Wrigley Field shook as the Cubs eliminated the Padres with a 3-1 Game 3 win in the NL Wild Card. Michael Busch’s towering seventh-inning homer lit up the ballpark, and the Cubs’ defense and bullpen slammed the door on San Diego. It marked Chicago’s first postseason series win since 2017, and their first clincher at Wrigley since the 2016 NLCS. Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker chipped in clutch hits, while Dansby Swanson dazzled with Gold Glove defense that even had Padres manager Mike Shildt calling him the “MVP of the series.” The Cubs now move on to face division rival Milwaukee in the NLDS in what promises to be a fiery showdown.
