There’ve been several attempts over the years to legalize online casinos in Maine, but none have crossed the finish line. Most recently, a new bill was introduced to exclusively allow Maine’s tribes, including the Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Houlton Band of Maliseet, and Mi’kmaq Nation, to operate online casinos in the state. The proposal would give the state an 18% cut of all online casino revenue if passed.
But for now, it hasn’t been approved, so you still can’t legally access any online casinos in Maine.
Up until mid 2026, sweepstakes casinos were a legal option for ME citizens looking to enjoy online casino-like gameplay. This, however, has changed.
In July 2026, legislative document 2007 became legally binding. Signed by Governor Janet Mills, the document clarifies the dual or multi-currency nature of sweepstakes casinos and categorically bans them from operating within the state.
Sweeps casinos typically use two currencies; Gold Coins (GC) and Sweepstakes Coins (SC) or similar, depending on the site. Gold Coins are valueless and used for fun, while Sweepstakes Coins can be used to redeem real world prizes.
As a result of LD 2007, Maine citizens will not be able to play at online sweeps casinos.
