PFL is deciding to become a little bit more violent.
Announced today by PFL CEO Donn Davis, the Professional Fighters League is removing a restriction that will bring the promotion closer to modern MMA standards. This rule change will provide a little more violence for the bloodlust within MMA fans’ soul.
PFL returns to action this weekend with their promotional tournament championships. The 2024 PFL Championships will happen on Nov. 29th and feature $10 million in total prizes.
PFL has decided that all title fights will allow elbows, a technique traditionally prohibited by PFL’s tournament ruleset. This new rule will allow for championship fights during the yearly tournament to use elbows and utilize a ruleset that is permissible under the unified ruleset.
Adding elbows does seem trivial in the grand scheme of things in the sport of MMA. Virtually all promotions universally allow the strike. But PFL has a consistent tournament format and looked to actually minimize damage to allow the season to go smoother.
In an era of a necessary viral element to the fight business, knockouts are king. PFL adding elbows to the championship fights will, in theory, produce more highlights at the highest levels of the sport.
This new fold in the new rules of PFL championship fights could potentially give a reigning champion a leg up. The longer the champions fight as the champion, the more opportunity they have to fight with elbows.
Challengers do not get the same benefit.
This new ruleset will be in effect this weekend, and fortunately for fans, there are 10 title fights on the entire card.
The 2024 PFL Championships take place this Friday, Nov. 29th and will be the biggest card the promotion has to date. Headlining is a huge fight between Brendan Loughnane and Timur Khizriev. On the line will be the featherweight season title and a cool million bucks.
Other names on the card are Talia Santos, Dakota Ditcheva, Impa Kasanaganay, and Mansour Barnoui. The card will be broadcast live on ESPN+. Don’t miss the biggest prize fight card of the year in MMA.
