This weekend the biggest celebrity boxing event of 2024, Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul, hits Arlington, TX.
It's a fight more than a year in the making. In 2023, Netflix announced that they would be looking to live broadcast Paul's next match. Starting back in 2018, the former Disney kid and YouTube prankster has crafted a notable career as a celebrity pugilist.
Most recently the 'Problem Child' defeated former UFC welterweight and current bare knuckle star Mike Perry via 6th round TKO.
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) has confirmed that Jake Paul's fight with Mike Tyson will be a professional contest under modified boxing rules.
To date, Paul has amassed a 10-1 record as a pro boxer, with only one of his bouts registered as an amateur or exhibition contest. The 27-year-old made his pro debut against fellow social media celeb AnEsonGib in 2020, following that fight with a win over former NBA player Nate Robinson. In the years since, Paul has largely faced notables from the MMA world, including Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley, Nate Diaz, and Anderson Silva. His lone loss in his career came against Tommy Fury—half brother of heavyweight boxing king Tyson Fury—after which Paul won his next four bouts.
As with almost all of Paul's bouts to date, the fight will only be scheduled for eight rounds rather than the more standard ten or twelve. It's the first time Tyson will have competed in a pro bout scheduled for less than ten rounds since his first run to heavyweight gold in 1985.
It's not just the number of rounds that are shorter. Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul will have modified rules and use two-minute rounds, rather than the standard three, with the fighters also agreeing on 14oz boxing gloves instead of the more typical 10oz gloves.
Given the shorter time frame and the bigger gloves, it seems likely the bout will have more of an exhibition feel. In 2020 Tyson competed against former undisputed light heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr. under a very similar rule set. Tyson vs. Jones took place with eight 2-minute rounds, with 12oz gloves. Despite not being an officially licensed contest, a panel of WBC judges declared the bouta split draw.
Current expectation is Mike Tyson and Jake Paul will enter the ring at 10 p.m. ET. Or, about 4.5 hours after the start of the event.
The Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul undercard is set to start at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time, or 2:30 p.m. Pacific on Friday, November 15th. The bout will be free to Netflix subscribers, but will require an active account to watch.
