Only a select few UFC fighters in history have ever lost a title and then won it again in their careers, but former welterweight champion Leon Edwards intends to be one of them. If he does so, 'Rocky' would be joining a list that consists of legendary names, such as Georges St-Pierre, Cain Velasquez, Randy Couture, Stipe Miocic, Dominick Cruz and T.J. Dillashaw.
Although only a small percentage of champions managed to accomplish the feat, Edwards hopes he can be the next one to do it. As he still has not fully come to terms with the fact that he lost the welterweight belt to Belal Muhammad at UFC 304, Rocky intends to win the title back before the end of 2025.
In a conversation on Instagram page MyProtein, Leon Edwards explained how much losing bothers him as an athlete. Given that he had not lost a fight in nine years before the Muhammad loss made Rocky remember how much he does not enjoy not winning. For now, the former champion is still managing to accept the feeling and trying to move on from the loss.
“My goal right now is to get the belt back. I'd like to be champion by the end of next year — around this time next year, so I’m just putting steps in place.”
“I haven’t lost a fight in like nine years,” Edwards said. “It’s getting used to that feeling again, but I feel like I hate losing more than I love winning. There’s not much you can do now, you know, just move on from that and put it behind you. For me, it’s more about what’s next and and how do you get back to where you want to get to. My goal is to be a two-time world champion.”
During his UFC career, Leon Edwards had an amazing nine-year undefeated run, in which he scored wins over some of the biggest names in the welterweight division, including Kamaru Usman, Colby Covington, Rafael dos Anjos, Donald Cerrone, and Nate Diaz. In fact, the most recent loss the 32-year-old had suffered prior to the Muhammad one was a unanimous decision defeat to former champion Kamaru Usman, in December 2015.
