Jon Jones had some very negative things to say about UFC interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall.
With UFC 309 media in full swing, “Bones” has gone out of his way to make it completely clear that he does not intend to unify the belt with the interim champion and is, instead, eyeing a super fight with Alex Pereira.
Jon Jones is currently doing media on his upcoming fight with Stipe Miocic but the conversation has hardly been about the aforementioned Miocic. Instead, the 37-year-old is talking about his future, be it Pereira, retirement or something else.
Speaking to media ahead of UFC 309, Jon Jones has not been kind to Tom Aspinall. The JacksonWink fighter has mentioned that he’d not want to do business with the British interim champion and would rather retire than unify the belts.
“If I’m being completely honest, I feel like Tom’s been such an a--ole that I don’t want to do business with him,” Jones said on UFC 309 media day. “His fans have been so annoying.”
Continuing, Jones said, “He’s 30 so he’s from this influencer generation. You hop online and the t-shirt sales, and all that, I’m past that type of stuff.”
This comes on the heels of UFC 309 where Jones will fight Stipe Miocic, the most decorated heavyweight in UFC history. Jones has been contemplating retirement and has said he’s open to super fights like Alex Pereira, Derrick Lewis, and Jamahal Hill.
The curious thing about this whole situation is Jon Jones taking issue Stipe Miocic’s comments on UFC Countdown earlier this week. Jones took to his Instagram stories telling Miocic that his comments telling Jones, “Let’s go, b--h.” crossed the line.
Curiously enough, Jones talking to the media calling Aspinall an “a--ole” is exactly the same thing he went at Miocic for. But Jones is no stranger to controversy and could just be setting out to antagonize Aspinall.
Jon Jones takes on Stipe Miocic this weekend at UFC 309. Tom Aspinall will also be in New York City for the event at Madison Square Garden to weigh in as the backup for the main event between Jones and Miocic.
