“I’ve dibbed and dabbed in MMA for a while now. After being in that camp with Jon Jones, that definitely put a major spark in me to go out there and do MMA. Not sure the promotion yet, but Jon definitely lit a fire under me and was like, ‘Hey, I think you should go back to wrestling, I think you should try MMA. We got a great team here with Albuquerque if you want to join us.’ It was just fascinating how I got into everything so quick.”
There’s good and bad in there for UFC fans. Yes, Gable Steveson looks to be leaning to fighting in MMA. But with promotions like PFL throwing out major money, it could make things very interesting for a fighter who has yet to put on MMA gloves for a professional fight.
Gable Stevenson's interesting career choices could lead to an MMA berth.
The wrestling career of Gable Steveson was meteoric. While enrolled in Minnesota, Steveson made Team USA in freestyle wrestling. He tore through the ranks and matched up with the Georgian, Geno Petriashvili, in the finals.
After a back and forth match, Steveson, who had won the NCAA finals just a few months earlier, came from behind and scored two points as time expired to win the gold medal.
