Sometimes a second chance against an opponent who has defeated them in the past is all a fighter ever wants, especially when they are proud athletes in their prime. Such is the case of bantamweight contender Cory Sandhagen.
One of the top men in his division, the 'Sandman' would like a do-over against former champion Petr Yan, who defeated him via unanimous decision back in October 2021. Having recently scored a win against ex-flyweight title-holder Deiveson Figueiredo last weekend at UFC Macau, the Russian has once again found himself on Sandhagen's sights.
While it is true that Sandhagen is interest in a rematch against Yan, he also made it clear in his call-out that he means no disrespect to the Russian or to Figueiredo for that matter. In fact, he praised both men's performances on his YouTube channel, while taking the opportunity to make himself available for a potential rematch against Yan.
“It was a really interesting fight. Yan looked amazing to be honest. I kind of figured that the fight would go the way that it was just because Figgy is more chaotic, square version. Yan is a much bladed, technical guy. That’s not a knock on Figgy. Figgy usually makes his chaos work, but you kind of saw that that’s the way the fight was going to go. Congrats to Yan, he looked really great. Figgy is a really good matchup for him to look really good in specifically.”
“Congrats to Yan, maybe we’ll do it next,” Sandhagen said. “I don’t really know what the division’s going on. I haven’t really heard too much. I was hoping to hear probably sometime next week about the direction that they are going to go in because I know they were waiting on this fight to play out. Congrats to Yan. I still want to get that one back. We’ll see if it’ll be next or not.”
In his last outing, Cory Sandhagen suffered a frustrating unanimous decision loss in a title eliminator against Umar Nurmagomedov, in August of this year. The loss snapped a three-fight winning streak for the 32-year-old, who had victories over Song Yadong, Rob Font and Marlon Vera prior to the defeat.
