The 2024 IBJJF No Gi Pan Championship happened over three days in Forth Worth, Texas and it provided some interesting BJJ action and notable champions.
The BJJ event saw a couple of rising stars win their first major title, along with an MMA champion continuing to beat much younger grapplers. By far the most notable performance from the three-day event though, was from Elisabeth Clay, who won double gold so soon after childbirth.
On the men’s side of things, BJJ stars Cole Abate, Max Hanson, and Rafael Lovato Jr. were among the big name gold medal winners from the 2024 No Gi Pans.
Former Bellator MMA champion Rafael Lovato Jr. continued his impressive run at the jiu-jitsu scene at age 41. While he does qualify for the older Master’s divisions, Lovato instead joined the adult black belt bracket and beat much younger opponents to take gold at super-heavyweight.
Lovato previously beat Gegard Mousasi to win the Bellator middleweight title in 2019, but was forced to stop competing in MMA at 11-0 due to a brain condition called cerebral cavernoma. He has since gone on a tear at the BJJ scene, following up on his ADCC 2024 silver medal with this no gi pans gold.
Rising stars Cole Abate and Max Hanson also shined on the event, with the two highly regarded young grapplers taking their first major IBJJF titles. The AOJ product in Abate won gold at featherweight, while Hanson won at lightweight.
No gi world champ Edwin “Junny” Ocasio also won his second pans title at light featherweight.
Elisabeth Clay was the biggest standout at the 2024 IBJJF No Gi Pan Championship.
Clay, a Polaris GP winner and two-time world no gi champion, sat out for most of 2024 due to pregnancy. She didn’t just quickly return to the mats soon after childbirth, she actually won a major tournament. The 24-year-old BJJ star did not miss a beat in her first competition back, winning gold medals in both her division and the open weight class.
Double gold in a major IBJJF tournament is already impressive enough on its own, but doing that just two months after giving birth to her first child is just unbelievable.
Also impressing on the women’s side of things was Nadia Frankland, who won gold at 147 lbs and went on to take bronze at the Absolute division as well. 2019 ADCC Trials champ Amanda Leve also won gold at the medium-heavyweight division.
