The CFTC has cleared Polymarket to enter the US prediction market
Polymarket had been under investigation, accused of accepting US customers while unlicensed in the country
The CFTC and the Justice Department ended that investigation into Polymarket in July without filing charges
A move that's been anticipated for the past couple of months is now official. Polymarket has been cleared by the Commodities and Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to launch in the US prediction market industry.
Shayne Coplan, Chief Executive Officer of Polymarket, announced the news via a
post on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter.
“Polymarket has been given the green light to go live in the USA by the @CFTC,” Coplan posted. “Credit to the Commission and Staff for their impressive work.
"This process has been accomplished in record timing.”
Polymarket was cleared of any wrongdoing by the CFTC and DOJ
The Polymarket platform had been under investigation by the CFTC and the Department of Justice. The platform was accused of accepting customers from the US while not being licensed to operate in the US market. That investigation closed in July.
Earlier this week, the CFTC announced that it was taking a "no-action" position following the investigation into Polymarket.
"The Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s Division of Market Oversight and the Division of Clearing and Risk today announced they have taken a no-action position regarding swap data reporting and recordkeeping regulations for event contracts in response to a request from QCX LLC, a designated contract market, and QC Clearing LLC, a derivatives clearing organization," the
CFTC announced
in a statement.
"The divisions will not recommend the CFTC initiate an enforcement action against either entity or their participants for failure to comply with certain swap-related recordkeeping requirements and for failure to report to swap data repositories data associated with binary option transactions and variable payout contract transactions executed on or subject to the rules of QCX LLC and cleared through QC Clearing LLC, subject to the terms of the no-action letter."

Polymarket recently purchased the derivatives exchange QCX
QCX recently became part of the Polymarket empire. Polymarket purchased the derivatives exchange company in July for $112 million.
While a small player in the commodities exchange industry, QCX is CFTC licensed. The acquisition provided a path for Polymarket, billed as the world's largest prediction market, into the lucrative and still-emerging US market.
Launched in 2020, Polymarket is an American-based prediction market, headquartered in Manhattan, NY. The site offers thousands of prediction markets every day. Markets are available in areas including politics, sports, entertainment, business, current events, and pop culture happenings. Operating in markets other than the US, Polymarket handled more than $6 billion in prediction market trades during the first half of 2025.
Polymarket recently announced a partnership to become the official prediction market of social media site 𝕏.
When playing an event market, bettors choose whether to back that the proposed outcome for the event will or won't happen.
This move comes shortly after Trump invested in Polymarket
There certainly is curious timing to the announcement that charges won't be laid by the DOJ against Polymarket. The news was delivered just days after Donald Trump Jr., the son of US President Donald Trump, made a significant investment in the company.
Just last week, Trump Jr.’s venture-capital firm, 1789 Capital, announced a strategic investment in Polymarket. Along with his investment in the company, Trump Jr. was appointed as a strategic advisor to Polymarket.
Terms of the investment were not disclosed.
Trump Jr. also serves as an advisor to Kalshi, one of Polymarket's leading rivals in the prediction market industry.
