Microbetting is definitely a hot-button issue in sports betting in the US market. If New Jersey Assemblyman Dan Hutchison gets his way, microbetting will be eliminated from the state's sports betting landscape.
Hutchison is the sponsor of New Jersey bill A 5971. The objective of this bill is to slow down the sometimes frenetic pace of the sports betting cycle in the Garden State. If passed into law, the bill would prohibit sports wagering licensees in New Jersey from offering micro bets. It would also establish penalties for violators.
“The pace of micro betting is designed to keep people gambling constantly, making one impulsive bet after another with little time to think,” Hutchison (D-Atlantic, Camden, Gloucester) said in a
press release
on his official web page.
“This bill is a common-sense step to slow that cycle down and protect individuals from the financial and emotional harms that can come with excessive betting.”
What is microbetting on sports?
Live betting was given its introduction into sports betting within the past decade. It enables bettors to place wagers on in-game outcomes. This could be which team scores the next touchdown in a football game. It might be which player hits the next home run in a baseball game.
Microbetting ramps up that process even more significantly. Hutchison's bill defines a micro bet as a proposition bet placed live during a sporting event that relates to the outcome of the next play or action.
A micro bet could be whether the next pitch in a baseball game is a strike or a ball. You could wager on a specific player to score the next goal in a hockey game. Or perhaps who will drain the next 3-point field goal in a basketball game.

Microbetting at the heart of MLB investigation
Microbetting has come under the national spotlight recently for its apparent role in an MLB betting scandal involving Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz. MLB wound up placing Ortiz on non-disciplinary paid leave. The investigation is regarding pitches he threw in two specific games that were generating an inordinate amount of microbetting action. According to investigators, multiple micro bets were placed on online betting platforms in Ohio, New York, and New Jersey on those two pitches.
This is one of the reasons why Hutchison is proposing his bill. He believes that microbetting is the type of wager that could lead to unscrupulous betting on a play. Selecting a single play during a game would be much easier for gamblers to fix than the outcome of an entire game.
Problem gambling organizations also believe that the continuous availability of action from microbetting is dangerous. It can pave the way toward the development of gambling addictions.
“The evidence underscores that micro betting can accelerate the path to problem gambling, especially among vulnerable populations such as youths and individuals with a history of compulsive gambling," said Luis Del Orbe, Executive Director of the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ). “By eliminating micro betting, this legislation would take an essential step toward protecting citizens from the harmful effects of reckless gambling practices.”
Hutchison isn't seeking to halt sports betting
In proposing this legislation, Hutchison is making it clear that he isn't an anti-sports betting advocate. His objective is to eradicate what he feels is a dangerous form of sports betting for both participants and bettors.
“This legislation isn’t about banning sports betting," Hutchison said. "It’s about setting boundaries to ensure it’s done responsibly. By banning micro bets, we would be taking a clear stand against predatory practices that push people toward irresponsible gambling habits.”
