That big match your favorite soccer team is about to play? It’s just kicking off, when you realize it’s only available on a paid TV or streaming service. What do you do? PromoGuy got curious: who are the biggest “goal diggers” in the country—who’s so hooked on seeing their team score that they’ll happily ghost a bill for it?

Here’s what we found:

  • 42% of U.S. soccer fans share a sports streaming account with someone outside their household.
  • Among all MLS fanbases, Minnesota United supporters top the list—54% admit to sharing their login.
  • Over 1 in 3 soccer fans has used illegal streams to watch their favorite team in action, and nearly half of those say it’s because of the cost.
  • On average, American soccer fans spend $44 a month on TV and sports streaming services just to catch their team play.

Being a soccer fan doesn’t come cheap. With more and more matches hidden behind paywalls, it can cost a pretty penny to catch your favorite team on screen. And often, one subscription just isn’t enough. According to PromoGuy's survey, U.S. soccer fans spend around $44 a month on (sports) TV and streaming services to keep up with their club. But what if you can’t — or don’t want to — pay that much?

Minnesota soccer fans share streaming accounts outside their household most

PromoGuy’s survey shows that 42% of soccer fans share their streaming accounts with someone outside their household. While this goes against the terms of service for many platforms, it’s clearly a common workaround.

Among MLS fanbases, Minnesota United FC supporters share the most, with 54% admitting to it. LAFC fans follow closely at 53%, and Houston Dynamo FC fans come in at 52%. At the other end, St. Louis City SC fans share the least—just 15%. That’s well below the average, and even lower than the Portland Timbers (21%) and Nashville SC (24%), who round out the bottom three.

One in three U.S. soccer fans watch games through illegal streams

We also asked fans if they watch games through illegal streams. Over a third (36%) said they (occasionally) do. Of those, 43% say it’s to save money. Other reasons include needing too many different services (22%), wanting to watch teams not available in their region (19%), or simply finding it easier (16%). Among all fanbases, New York City FC supporters have the highest share admitting to streaming games illegally—50%. Again, St. Louis City SC fans are the lowest, at just 14%.

Methodology

PromoGuy’s 2025 Goal Diggers Study investigated how often U.S. soccer fans share sports streaming services outside their household and how common illegal streaming is. The survey, conducted online on July 9–10, 2025, included 2,000 U.S. respondents who identified as soccer fans. Of all respondents, 57% identified as female, 42% as male, and 1% as non-binary. The average age of participants was 39.9 years. Respondents were asked which MLS team they support, which sports streaming services they use (if any), their average monthly spending on these services, whether they share their accounts with individuals outside their household, whether they have ever accessed soccer matches via illegal streaming, and if so, their primary reasons for doing so. The survey focused exclusively on U.S.-based MLS teams, and fanbases of Canadian MLS teams were excluded from the study.
